This story makes me so angry. Reading the first hundred pages or so it made me angry and almost sick by what Daddy Glen did to Bone, the worst was that I didn't see it coming. What makes me so angry was that I don't understand how someone can do this , especially with all the circumstances at the time. It was her stepfather and Bone's mother was at the time trying to have a baby at the hospital, the thought of this makes me sick.
Beyond all this I feel bad for Bone in many ways. Because of her families financial status, I think Bone seems to have a hard time. But to add what Daddy Glen does, I feel, puts her over the edge sometime. When it gets to this point she tries to leave, not be at the house. Think about if it were you, afraid to go home? What would you do, where would you go. Also it makes me sad that her mother isn't doing more at this point to help her.
What really gets to me is the Bone seems to be blaming herself for what Daddy Glen is doing to her. I believe the reason she is doing this is because of how old she is. Children most times blame themselves for things, like if their parents got divorced, usually the child thinks it is something they did wrong. I think the same thing is happening here. Bone believes that it is something she did to make Daddy Glen act this way. I also think it has something to do with fear, because she knows what he is doing is wrong but she might think that if she tells someone that her mother has to choose between her and Glen, and in the back of her mind scared that her might pick Glen over her.

I can understand the anger. I wanted to strangle Daddy Glen and send Anney to jail. These people do not deserve children. Bone's anger makes me think that she will be okay because at least she is feeling something and can let others know of her feelings. Icannot imagine how horrible it is for this child to not be able to go home and fear someone so much. Just to have so much emotion and not knw what to do with it. I think that the real tragic character in all this is Anney. She is not protecting Bone and allows all this to happen and then just abandons her to be with...Glen.
After thinking about Bone's situation I think that Anney bears the blame for alot of what happened to Bone. Anney had to know what was going on. She was at home for many of the beatings and she knew that they were unprovoked. I can't understand why she didn't leave Glen. It wasn't like they were living on his salray or were somehow conected to him.
Laura,
I really felt the same way throughout reading this book. It is nearly impossible to not have your emotions stirred up when you read such a horrifying story. But what I am most heartbroken over is how true your last line came to be … In the end, when Mama did see the truth and Bone started to feel some hope, Mama did exactly as you predicted. Mama chose Glen over Bone. I have to say, that when I got to this point in the novel, I was finally thinking that Bone would be saved and that Glen would be served his justice. I did not expect the exact opposite to happen. Maybe it was wishful thinking. I feel like my insides have been torn apart for Bone and I cannot help but utterly hate Anney.
I can't believe was Glen did to Bone either. It's really sad, and what's worse is that Bone thinks that it is her fault and she is afraid to tell anyone. The whole time reading I just want to tell her that it's not her fault and get her out of that scary situation but I can't. I can't exactly say that I saw this coming, but when Glen first entered the picture, something about his description was a little off. As a reader I felt like I really wanted to like him, but like everyone in the Boatwright family there was just something about him that I couldn't get over. So when he actually did abuse Bone I instantly wanted him gone, and was sad to see the situation get worse and worse.
I agree with you, I didn't see the worst of it coming, and I was absolutely disgusted while I was reading the last few chapters. My mouth was literally wide open in surprise and disbelief. Bone's life clearly wasn't an easy one, since she was born she's had this "mark" on her, she was born into a poverty striken family, she grows up being abused, sees her friend gruesomely killed, etc, etc. Nothing in Bone's childhood is normal, and she dealt with so much more than no one should ever have to deal with. The only positive about the ending, is I feel that Aunt Raylene is definitely the best person for her to live with. Bone will really be able to heal and grow and learn from her aunt.
Bone really had a rough time, I wouldn't wish her life on anyone, the whole thing is very sickening. And you are right Bone is blameing herself and she really shouldn't be. While doing my readings I kept thinking to myself "tell someone, Bone, just tell someone" it made it hard to get through the readings each time without thinking that.
I agree with you that Bone is blaming herself and taking all of her stress and the horrible situations and turing them into anger. She portrays anger throughout the story. It is sad how anger she is, especially as a young child, who is suppose to be enjoying her childhood. But Bone is doing the opposite of enjoying her childhood. All because of a man who needs help. It is so aggervating and frusterating to read on, hearing how Anney is taking care of this situation and how Glen is getting away with such a crime. If that was my child, he would have been gone. I dont understand why Anney did not get rid of him, knowing what he had done.
I think it is terrible that Bone blames herself for the abuse she receives from Glen. She has been told time and time again that it is her fault and that she is a bad girl and must be punished for her actions, but this is not the case. Her mother is convinced that Glen is right as well, which much make Bone feel crazy because her mother, Anney, is never around when the abuse actually takes place; she is only there after Bone is in the process of being beaten.
ditto dr. chip. i really like what jenilyn wrote. Hopefully none of us can really understand, even to a small degree, the hopelessness, shame, and guilt that Bone experiences at the hands of her family, but I agree that Anney and Glen should be in jail, if not worse.
